Player Scoop
Last season, McCarthy played south west of Sweden for the Les Spartiates
des Amiens (Amiens is the city) in France. The Spartiates play in the top
league (Elite League) in the northern division. The team posted a respectable
7-4 record which was good enough to make the playoffs. Again, McCarthy was
a do-it-all player for the Spartiates as he played Defensive End, Tight End and
Long Snapper.

Patrick McCarthy is an ambassador of American football by representing the
past, present, and future of this great game. He volunteers his time as a youth
team football coach and offers his services as a personal trainer. McCarthy is
also involved with physical education classes and after school programs
teaching children the history and fundamentals of football.

Patrick McCarthy, former University of Minnesota footballer and Neenah,
Wisconsin native has put together one heck of resume with his two years of
playing football in Europe. The 3-time Academic All-Big Ten performer and
3-time University of Minnesota Scholar-Athlete Honoree is a rising star in the
European Football Leagues. This past season, the 6-1 230 lb. McCarthy,
who plays middle linebacker, has lead his team (Djurgardens IF, Sweden)
to a perfect 11-0 record. His defense has given up a mere 47 points in 11
games while posting 6 shutouts. McCarthy has been a do-everything athlete
on the football field. He also serves as the teams long snapper and has
played some quarterback in certain game situations. He has a touchdown
pass to add to the long list of plays that he was involved with on the
defensive side of the ball. The Djurgardens IF football team has been
elevated to the SuperSeries League which is the highest level of football in
Sweden. Their perfect season has made a strong statement along with a
solid foundation for success at the next level of competition. The team is
located in Stockholm and is one of the largest and oldest sports clubs in all
of Sweden.

“Playing football overseas has given me tremendous rewards, says McCarthy. I
was given a chance to continue my football career along with the ability to travel
and live in places that would have been impossible due to finances. Living in a
foreign country is a challenge at times, but the rewards far outweigh the
challenges. I have experienced different cultures and have lived the life as a
European. Instead of just passing through countries as a tourist for a couple
days, I have lived the lifestyle. It truly has been a blessing.”

“I have also had the opportunity to meet some great people that would have
never been possible without this game of football. It has increased my
perception of the world. Three years ago, I could not have imagined myself
living in two foreign countries for months at a time. I have been so fortunate to
have visited many places and introduced to many interesting people.”
