My name is Ja’Donn Harris, I was born on the outskirts of Chicago, in a town by the name of Waukegan, IL. Waukegan was
a very diverse community when I was growing up. It was common to see my circle of friends to include: 1st generation
German immigrants, American Caucasians/Blacks, Jamaicans, Philippines, Mexican, and Middle Easterners. These
friends were also my teammates, which established an even tighter bond, and educational experience. I firmly believe
that my community shaped me to be the man that I am today.
I am one of four children. My family has always had a “global” mindset. Collectively my parents, siblings and myself have
traveled Africa, Europe, Asia, South America, and the Caribbean. My parents felt that it was important to see the world in
order to comprehend the world. This was a philosophy that was very similar to that of Dr. King. He felt that travel, would
fight ignorance and prejudice, because of the exposure to different lifestyles and cultures.
As a result of this upbringing, my family is a reflection of this travel and diversity. My in laws range from Caucasians for the
South, to a Mexican, to a Bahamian.
Football for me has always been a conduit for me to facilitate this “Global” mindset. I have been in competitive football
since the age of 5. I’ve had the opportunity to travel around the U.S. and the world as a result. Every fall, my Pop Warner
team qualified for travel to places like Georgia, Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Florida. As a college player I experienced travel
over the Midwest. Finally, as a coach and scout, I have been able to travel to Europe, All over the U.S. and even Native
American reservations, as a result. I believe that being able to travel has allowed me to be impacted by others as well, me
being able to impact other communities as a travel.
I am very passionate about the opportunities that football has created for me, and how it can be used to create
opportunities for others. Outside of soccer, football, especially in American culture, draws massive crowds, and typically
draws a large number of participants. In a lot of modern day- societies, sports and sport figures, maintain a powerful
influence. Due to this influence, I believe that the leaders (Coaches) of these teams need to be a person of positive
influence! Men, in most cases, influence society negatively or positively, and a football employs hundreds and thousands
of men, this enables me the opportunity to make a positive influence on thousands of lives. This is the single most
important opportunity that football has provided for me, and my mission to leave a positive impact on the world!
