The Swiss Football League (SFL) was founded in 1982 in Lugano by the former
president of the Lugano Seagulls, Massimo Monti. Unfortunately they were the only
American Football Team at that time.
The first Swiss Championship took part in 1986 with 8 Teams competing in one
league.
The Federation’s name was changed from Swiss Football League (SFL) to
Schweizer American Football Verband (SAFV) in 1987. The new board of directors
did its best to fulfill all the requirements to be assimilated into the Swiss National

Sport Federation. This finallyhappened in 1990 and in 2003 when they became a member of the IFAF. After this
the Swiss American Football Federation was not only a member of the European American Football Federation
(EFAF) anymore.
This opened the door for Swiss teams to participate in international championships and since 1987 some of their
teams competed in those international championships and became more and more successful.
Swiss National American Football Team
In 2003 the federation started to build a National Football Team as well as a Junior National Football Team. The
juniors took part in the European qualification in 2004/2006 and the adults participated for the first time in a C-EM
in Austria in 2007.
